Digital E-Cassette

Digital E-Cassette

This fantastic little MP3 player isn't shaped like an audiocassette just to pay homage to last century's music format -- it actually allows for MP3 playback on any cassette deck! How cool is that?

It comes with 96MB of memory on board (expandable to 192MB) for as much as five (or more) hours of tunes (depending on audio and compression quality the sound files). The Digital E-Cassette operates like a conventional MP3 player, complete with thumb-touch controls, headphones and the appropriate PC software to load it up. Too, the digitally dexterous device comes complete with a rechargeable Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) battery, AC charger and cigarette lighter adapter (NiMH batteries are the type that have no "memory", unlike NiCad rechargeables which need to be fully drained before they'll take a charge properly; NiMHs can be fully juiced or topped up at anytime).

Of course, considering the shape, the Digital E-Cassette is compact enough to tote around in ones pocket for private, anywhere/anytime listening, but the fact that it will also plop into a car deck or home stereo for blaring out loud, ripped-rock-n-roll means it's one of the few music devices that spans two millenniums worth of audio technology. Plus, the unit's Digital Signal Processor (DSP) is fully programmable and upgradeable, which means it's ready to support alternate (non-MP3) and future digital audio standards.

All told, the Digital E-Cassette is perhaps a little pricey (especially for Canadians, considering the current state of the Canuck Buck). One might also consider a traditional MP3 Player -- like the Rio 800, or something cheaper for cheaper -- and a simple headphone-jack/cassette-player adapter, which cost $15 - $50 at your local audio store. Then again, such an ad-hoc ensemble up isn't nearly as tidy, sleek and sexy as the Digital E-Cassette. It's your call.
