HP DVD200i

HP DVD200i

HP's push to set user-friendly DVD movie making standards should be commended. Though priced in the "luxury class" of computer components, HP's new DVD200i internal drive does make DVD creation a practical, soon-to-be-common PC function.

Using the included, near-effortless "MyDVD" software, burning digital versatile disc movies (home-made or otherwise) or massive file archives onto DVD has never been easier. The HP DVD200i also works as a DVD ROM reader and movie player, of course, as well as a CD reader, writer and player.

The unit's decided compatibility with the DVD+R (write once) and DVD+RW (writable and re-writable) (note the "+") format developed by Philips, HP and Sony and adopted by countless other manufacturers also signifies the 200i's incompatibility with DVD-Rs and DVD-RWs (note the "-"). The emerging DVD+RW standard does not require disc formatting/finalization, allows users to edit materiel already burned to disc, means better and wider compatibility with other DVD devices and is closer to "future-proof" in general.

Blank DVD+R discs run about US$7 or CA$10 each and DVD+RWs about US$12 or CA$18 each.
