After witnessing the technological freak-out that is the Jeep JXLTV Radio/TV/Lantern/Bidet & Boat-Anchor Combination Unit from the Jeep Provisions line, one had to wondering if Jeep had perhaps over-extended the concept of "manly travel gadgets." As it turns out: No, one radioactive apple does not the whole barrel taint – through it certainly does well to draw attention to the batch.
More befitting to the rugged show of chic in the Jeep Provision arsenal is the Jeep Boombox, a portable AM/FM Cassette & CD player, dress up like toolbox looking for action, complete with "combat stylings" that could have saved Private Ryan.
It does nothing to revolutionize portable music technology; it does offer a "manly man" take that is sure to appeal to anyone of the un-digital persuasion. It has big ol' toggle switches and full-bodied analogue dials instead of diminutive touch-sensitive nibs. With the lid locked down, the only things belying its function beyond a grenade-proof crate are the wire-meshed speakers housed in its side -- that and the translucent blue, red or yellow sheen of its moulded plastic housing that seems about as "combat-ready" as Calista Flockheart.
Audio quality is more than adequate, all things considered, though it does not "crank" like those like more-extravagant, portable bottom-thrumming ghetto blasters numbing the eardrums of today's rip-hopped audiophiles.
It's powered by an AC adapter (included) or 8 D cell batteries (not included) and can be easily adapted to jack into car's cigarette lighter plug, though Jeep Provisions didn't think to included such a device, even though a Jeep is a wilderness-inspired vehicle that needs no convenience store nor electrical outlet to do its thing. Curious.
Still, the idea is sound and considering the price point, the Jeep Boombox does exactly what a good 'box should in an exclusively Jeep kind of way.
