Texas Instruments wants has turned one of their advanced calculators for high school students into a mini-portable computer. The TI-83 Plus Silver Edition ($209.05 Canadian, or $139.99 USD) offers some hardcore math functions including graphing, algebra and statistics, finance among others. Plus it has space in its 1.5 MB memory for downloadable programs, many of which are free from the company website (though some cost $7 to $15 US). When you add the new optional keyboard suddenly the device is capable of basic word processing functions, so that you can take notes in class and edit that essay on what you did last summer. All this data can be shared by connecting the device to a Windows-based computer. If you already own a TI-83 Plus then the addition of the keyboard is a logical step. But if you're keen on a lighter smaller portable educational device, you're better off buying a Palm handheld computer and a compatible keyboard and outfitting it with various downloadable math and calculator software.
