Regardless of the long and lauded celebrity of Mattel's Hot Wheels, those diminutive and delightful little matchbox vehicles never could take much playtime pounding before wheels bent, roofs dented and units in their entirety became so chock full of mud, mysterious carpet materials and generic gunk as to be completely un-playful.
As it was in my days of vivid imagination and miniature motor vehicle whimsy, now my son has a collection of bent and bashed Hot Wheels that do nothing other than take up space or spill under foot in moments of restlessness. Imagine, then, my delight when I came across Spin Master Toy's MetalMaxx toy cars and trucks. These things are absolute beefcake, designed to be kid-handled like only kids can manhandle. Irreparable punishment is not and option, no matter how lavish the thumping – the worst we (heh heh) could do to our MetalMaxx Mega Shocks "Rambo" (a monster truck) was pop a shock out of its socket, where it easily but firmly snapped back in. In fact, the "Rambo" and similar such vehicles come with realistic, fully articulating shocks, springs and independent suspension, so when it's shoved around in a complete handful of childlike aggressiveness (not tinkered around with like a puny little, two fingered, straight-wheeled matchbox toy), it actually lumbers, leans and rides like a lean-mean-mobile should - physics lesson shouldn't be so much fun.
