Modern Drummer--the Rolling Stone of musician's magazines (or drummer magazines, at least)--has just released their 25 Year Digital Archive. Available as a 8-CD set or single DVD ROM (for Windows PC, Mac version "coming soon"), this abounding compendium contains every single page the glossy has ever printed, more than 35,000 pages worth from 265 issues. Essentially, it represents the entire history of drumming in a physically small/digitally massive package.
Technologically impressive, too, each page of every issue was manually scanned, each word of text and each image extracted, sorted, indexed, and cross referenced then all reformatted for digital display and optimised for interactivity with a custom graphic user interface (GUI).
The net result is a fully searchable and annotate-able archive that not only gives access to 25 years worth of individual articles, but a weighted list of every story, picture and ad containing similarly-themed content.
A thoroughly accomplished product.
