Plantronics CT12 Cordless Phone

Because cellular phones have become omnipresent in everyday life it's rather odd to come home to a phone that doesn't offer the same features.

Corded phones, for one, seem so Alexander Graham Bell. Still there are cordless phones, but why do they have to have the form factor of a man's size 11 shoe?

Well they don't. That's why I fell in love with the Plantronics CT12. It's a cordless phone about the size and weight of a bar of soap and has a little monochrome LCD screen that can display caller ID information and previous inbound phone numbers.

The phone includes a headset that you wear with either an ear-loop or an over-the-cranium headband, which is my preference. It's actually very comfortable. The headset also has an extended microphone boom that has good noise canceling technology, plus it has a little flashy thingy on the mike's tip that blinks when you are on the phone. It makes you look like a low flying aircraft in the dark.

The phone has a belt clip, but the headset wire is long enough that the phone comfortably reaches your pocket. Ok, you could argue that the phone could do with a wireless headset like a cellular phone. Maybe one day.

The device uses the 2.4 GHz radio band, so that it can comfortably work several rooms away from the included base station, potentially to a range of about 150 feet. I use it sitting on the deck at a range of about 50 feet (and through two walls) without a problem. However, it crackles a bit thanks to the wireless network and microwave in my home office. Both those devices transmit energy into the same wireless band that the CT12 uses, so interference is inevitable.

Still, the CT12 is my new favorite gadget, and it takes a cordless phone one step closer to the freedom and features of a cellular phone.
