Portege 2000 Notebook

Toshiba's new Portege 2000 sacrifices neither form nor function; it's both lithe and powerful.

Featuring an Intel Pentium III-M 750-MHz processor with 256 Megs of RAM (upgradeable to 512MB), a 20 Gig hard drive (actually dual 1.8 inch 10GB IDE drives) and a biggish 12" screen (1024x768 native resolution), the Portege 2000 also hosts 3 (three!) network connectivity options: a 56-Kbps modem, 10/100 Ethernet, and 802.11b wireless built right in.

Its slender profile (three-quarter inch at its thickest) and featherweight weigh (about 1.3 kg) still allows for a full sized keyboard as well expansion slots for USB or PCMCIA CD-ROM drive(s); Type II PCMCIA, infrared, and Secure Digital (SD), the latter of which makes file swapping with digital cameras, MP3 players and PDAs a snap (as opposed to networking with such devices). Toshiba's inclusion of a second battery is telling: without it, laptop sessions are limited to a couple of hours; with it--and the added bulk--there's more than 6 hours of AC-free use.

Bench-tests show the Portege to be up snuff with typical business applications, but a little sluggish with multimedia resource hogs--not a big deal for typical business users, which is the whole point.
