Veo Observer

I felt like a Peeping Tom when I installed the Veo Observer. This is a very small remote control camera that transmits live video images across a home network. But it's not just for peeping at your misbehaving cat or rug-burning child; it can also record both stills and video for later viewing.

You'll need a home network to get this device to work. They are increasingly common these days as people connect them to share high-speed Internet between multiple computers at home.

You plug the camera into the network using a network cable, as you would a computer and power it using a wall socket. The device also comes with a mount so you can hang it off a wall someplace.

Once it's all set up the device automatically connects to the network and is accessible through the software that comes with a computer on your network. Alternately you can access the camera by typing its network address into your web browser. It can also be accessed from anywhere on the Internet, although this is not an easy process to set up. You need to have a good working knowledge of your network router and how it translates information across the device's ports.

What's most fun about this camera is that it has controls to tilt and pan the lens so you can use the camera to look around. It also has a zoom button and the ability to change the video window between small, medium and large. This is all controlled from your web browser.

Ultimately, this gadget is for the network nerd or ambitious computer user and not for people that want easy, instant results from their technology toys.
